This is the painting I return to most often. It asks the most important question I know how to ask: what becomes of the potential that is never allowed to develop? What happens to the flower that no one tends? I painted this thinking of specific women in my life, and of myself. We are all, at some point, a flower in someone’s hands. The question is always: what will those hands do with us?

Description

A beautiful woman who was born from a flower. There were many flowers, but not all of them could become girls or women. Some are destroyed before they have the chance. External events and circumstances govern the life of a flower, sometimes preventing it from ever becoming a girl, or a woman.

Sometimes our society operates with a blunt cruelty that causes the flower to wither, simply because no one thought to care. The task, then, is to find the one in whose hands this flower will not wither but will bloom, and become everything it was always meant to be.
