I was fascinated by the idea of the earth’s core as something a woman could hold in her hands. All that heat, that pressure, that ancient and irreplaceable power, held still. The calm palette was the critical decision in this painting. I wanted the viewer to feel the contrast between the stillness of the woman and the magnitude of what she carries. She is not afraid. She has been holding it for a very long time.
