Cleopatra has always fascinated me, not as a historical figure, but as a symbol of a woman who commanded the world through presence alone. When I was painting this, I felt the warmth of the colours physically. Blue and pink together produce something very specific: the quality of light in the moments just before sunrise. I wanted to paint that feeling and give it her face.
