I was looking at photographs of Monica Bellucci at this time and thinking about the idea of beauty that does not perform. That does not stand up straight for anyone. The Village Love is about a body at rest, a woman who has stepped away from all the noise and into something softer and more honest. The muted colours were deliberate. I wanted nothing in this painting to raise its voice.
